Written in plain English. We aim to collect as little of your data as possible — because the less we hold, the less can be lost.
The status check tool — your ID number, mobile number and grant selection are processed entirely in your browser. They are never transmitted to our servers. Once you close or refresh the page they are gone.
Web server logs — like every website, our hosting provider (Firebase Hosting) records the pages requested, the country the request came from and the type of browser used, for a short retention period, purely for abuse prevention. These logs do not contain your ID or phone number.
We use zero third-party cookies. The site may set a small first-party preference cookie only if you interact with a feature that needs to remember state — currently there is no such feature.
The Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) gives South African residents a set of rights over their personal information. Since we do not collect personal information there is nothing for you to request, correct or delete. If that ever changes we will publish a clear opt-in first.
The site is served over HTTPS. Static files only — no login, no database, no user accounts. Even a total compromise of our hosting would not expose any user data because we don't hold any.
Every link to the SASSA website or a bank / retailer opens in a new tab. Once you leave this site the destination's own privacy policy applies. We do our best to only link to legitimate, official domains.
Our site is safe for all readers, and we do not process the personal data of anyone under 18. If a caregiver applies for a grant on behalf of a child through the official SASSA channels, they should read SASSA's own privacy notice.

If we ever start collecting new data (which we don't plan to), we will publish the change on this page, prominently, before it takes effect.
