About this site
SASSA Status Check is a small, independent public information site. It exists because the current SASSA landscape online is noisy, cluttered and often misleading — and getting a straight answer about a grant should not be that hard.
Who we are
We are a group of independent civic technologists based in South Africa. None of us work for SASSA or the Department of Social Development. We build the site in our own time and cover the small hosting cost ourselves — hence no ads, no tracking pixels and no data collection.
What we do (and do not) do
- We publish clear, jargon-free explanations of every SASSA grant, based on the official rules published by SASSA and the Department of Social Development.
- We route users to the correct official portal for their grant so they don't have to guess between three different SASSA subdomains.
- We do not query SASSA on your behalf. That would require your identity number and personal data to be shared with third parties, and we don't do that.
- We do not process payments. If any site asks you to pay to check your status, close it.
How we keep information accurate
- Every grant page cites the amount, income cap and age brackets published in the most recent SASSA circular or Government Gazette.
- We check the SASSA news feed monthly and update pages when a change is announced.
- We correct mistakes fast — if you spot one, use the contact page and we will fix it, publicly, with a change note.
What we believe about public-service websites
A public-service website should be quiet, fast and honest. That means:
- No pop-ups or paywalls.
- No advertising or sponsored content.
- No email or SMS capture.
- No cookies except the tiny handful your browser sets to remember you closed a menu.
- Loads on 2G data and low-end phones.
- Readable at 200% zoom, and by screen readers.
How this differs from the official SASSA site
The official sassa.gov.za is where you submit applications, banking details and complaints. This site is where you go to understand what to submit, why, and what happens next. Think of us as the plain-English companion.
Corrections
If anything on the site is out of date or unclear, please write to the toll-free line under contact. We publish a short changelog with every update.
