Grant-in-Aid

The Grant-in-Aid is not a stand-alone grant. It is a top-up of R560 per month paid on top of your Older Persons, Disability or War Veteran's grant when your medical condition means you need someone to look after you full-time.

Who qualifies

  • You already receive an Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant or War Veteran's Grant.
  • You need regular attendance from another person because of your physical or mental condition.
  • You are not being cared for in a state-funded institution.

Medical proof

A medical report from an authorised doctor must confirm that you cannot cook, wash, dress or take medication without help. SASSA supplies the correct form; do not use a general disability certificate.

Documents

  • ID document.
  • Confirmation letter that you already receive an existing SASSA grant.
  • Signed medical assessment form (SMG 1V — Grant-in-Aid).

How to apply

  1. Visit the SASSA office that pays your current grant.
  2. Ask specifically for the Grant-in-Aid application form.
  3. Attend the medical assessment with a state doctor.
  4. Wait 30–90 days for the decision. Payments are added to your existing grant.

Common mistake: Grant-in-Aid is paid to the grant recipient, not directly to the caregiver. The recipient uses the extra R560 as they see fit to secure care.

When it stops

  • The underlying grant lapses or is cancelled.
  • You are admitted to a state institution for longer than three months.
  • Your medical need for full-time attendance no longer exists.
