Everything about the 3-month reconfirmation requirement, reapplying after a decline, changing your bank details, and updating your phone number.
All SRD beneficiaries MUST reconfirm eligibility every 3 months. Failing to do so pauses your payments.
The SRD grant was designed as temporary relief. SASSA needs to verify that your circumstances haven't changed — that you're still unemployed, still earning below R624/month, and still not receiving another grant. The system reassesses you every 3 months automatically, but you must actively reconfirm your details.
SASSA sends SMS alerts prompting reconfirmation. Don't ignore them — failure to respond can result in payment suspension.
Visit srd.sassa.gov.za and navigate to the reconfirmation section. You can also reconfirm via WhatsApp at 082 046 8553.
Confirm that your personal and financial circumstances haven't changed. Answer honestly — incorrect answers can trigger "Self Exclusionary Response". See decline codes →
SASSA re-verifies your information within 14 days against all government databases. Your status will show "Pending" during this period.
Use our status check tool after 14 days to confirm you've been re-approved.
What happens if you miss reconfirmation: Your payment is paused (marked "Approved but no pay date" or temporarily delayed). The grant is NOT automatically cancelled, but it won't resume until you reconfirm. In extreme cases, prolonged failure to reconfirm can lead to grant cancellation.
Reapplication is different from reconfirmation — it's a full new application.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and select "Apply" or "Reapply".
Provide your 13-digit ID number, cellphone number, and banking details. Answer the screening questionnaire carefully.
Enter the OTP sent to your registered phone. OTP not arriving?
Takes 7–14 working days. Check your status regularly.
You can also reapply via WhatsApp at 082 046 8553.
Incorrect banking details are the #1 cause of approved-but-not-paid issues. See payment troubleshooting →
Enter your ID and registered phone number.
Find the section to update your payment method.
Your name on the bank account must EXACTLY match your name at Home Affairs. Even "J Smith" vs "John Smith" will cause a rejection.
Bank verification takes 7–21 days. Don't change details again during this period.
Critical: The account must be in YOUR name only. SASSA won't pay into third-party accounts. The account must also be FICA-compliant and active (not dormant).
Banking detail changes for Old Age, Disability, Child Support, and other permanent grants must be done in person at a SASSA office.
If you don't have a bank account, you can receive your SRD grant via:
Since 2026, phone changes require eKYC biometric verification for fraud prevention.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za using your ID number and old phone number.
You need your 6-digit Application ID. If you don't have it, enter your ID and old phone to retrieve it.
Take a selfie for facial recognition. Ensure good lighting and face the camera directly.
Provide the new cellphone number. It must be RICA-registered and active.
An OTP will be sent to your new number. Enter it to complete the change.
Processing time: Approximately 14 days for full system update.
An important change affecting all grant beneficiaries.
Starting March 2026: Biometric registration is becoming mandatory for all SASSA grant types. This includes fingerprint scanning and facial recognition. Beneficiaries who don't complete registration will have payments delayed and temporarily stopped.
SASSA discovered that approximately R140 billion in benefits were paid to over 75,000 deceased persons. Biometric verification ensures the person collecting the grant is alive and is the actual beneficiary.
If you receive an SMS about biometric registration, respond within 72 hours. If you're asked to visit a SASSA office for fingerprinting, do so as soon as possible to avoid payment delays. Bring your original SA ID document.
If you receive your SASSA grant via Postbank, you may need to swap your card.
Due to a cryptographic security breach affecting the old Gold Card system, Postbank is replacing all Gold Cards with new Black Cards.
