📩 OTP Not Received — Complete Fix

This is the #1 problem with SASSA online status checks. Here's every possible cause and solution.

Why OTPs Fail

  • Wrong phone number: You must use the exact cellphone number from your original SRD application. Even if you changed phones, the system uses the original registered number.
  • SIM not RICA-compliant: Your SIM card must be registered (RICA'd) and active. Unregistered SIMs won't receive OTPs.
  • Dual SIM phone: If you have two SIM cards, the OTP may be sent to the SIM in the wrong slot. Try swapping your SIM to the primary slot.
  • Server overload: During high-traffic periods (after monthly payment updates), SASSA's OTP servers get overwhelmed.
  • SMS storage full: If your phone's SMS inbox is full, new messages won't come through. Delete old messages.

Step-by-Step OTP Fix

Confirm your phone number

Make sure you're entering the EXACT number you used when applying. Not your current number — the original application number.

Clear SMS inbox

Delete old messages to make room. Check your spam/blocked messages folder too.

Try WhatsApp OTP method

Message 082 046 8553 on WhatsApp, choose option 4, then select "Get OTP Code". This often works when SMS fails.

Try off-peak hours

New eKYC Verification Required (2026)

Since 2026, changing your phone number requires eKYC biometric verification (facial recognition). This is a fraud prevention measure. Here's how:

Log into srd.sassa.gov.za

Use your 13-digit ID number and your old phone number to access your account.

Request phone number change

Navigate to the "Update Details" section and request a number change. You'll need your 6-digit Application ID.

Complete biometric verification

Follow the prompts to take a selfie for facial recognition. Your phone camera will be used.

Confirm via email and new OTP

You'll receive confirmation via email, then an OTP on your new number.

Wait for processing

The change takes approximately 14 days to process fully.
