Can't check your SASSA status? OTP not arriving? Portal down? Here's how to fix every common issue with the online status check system.
Click your problem below for the specific solution.
This is the #1 problem with SASSA online status checks. Here's every possible cause and solution.
Make sure you're entering the EXACT number you used when applying. Not your current number — the original application number.
Delete old messages to make room. Check your spam/blocked messages folder too.
Message 082 046 8553 on WhatsApp, choose option 4, then select "Get OTP Code". This often works when SMS fails.
Best times: before 6 AM or after 10 PM when traffic is lowest. Avoid checking right after payment date announcements.
Sometimes the OTP arrives after a delay (up to 5 minutes). Wait before requesting a new one. Multiple requests can cause temporary lockout.
Pro tip: Our status check tool on the homepage connects directly via WebSocket and doesn't require an OTP at all. Try it first.
Changed your phone number since applying? Here's the process to update it.
Since 2026, changing your phone number requires eKYC biometric verification (facial recognition). This is a fraud prevention measure. Here's how:
Use your 13-digit ID number and your old phone number to access your account.
Navigate to the "Update Details" section and request a number change. You'll need your 6-digit Application ID.
Follow the prompts to take a selfie for facial recognition. Your phone camera will be used.
You'll receive confirmation via email, then an OTP on your new number.
The change takes approximately 14 days to process fully.
Lost your Application ID? Enter your SA ID and old phone number on the portal to retrieve it. Or call 0800 60 10 11 for assistance. Full details guide →
If the online process doesn't work, visit any SASSA office with your original SA ID document. Staff can update your phone number in person. Processing takes the same ~14 days. Find your nearest office →
The srd.sassa.gov.za portal gets overwhelmed during peak periods. Here are your alternatives.
Common portal errors: "Service temporarily unavailable", "Please try again later", blank page, infinite loading. These all indicate server overload. They are NOT problems with your application — just try again at a quieter time or use an alternative method above.
If the portal loads but doesn't work properly, try these technical fixes.
