Asylum Seekers & Refugees: You can apply using your Section 22 permit number instead of an SA ID. The online portal supports this. If it doesn't work online, apply at your nearest SASSA office with your permit document.
Have everything ready before starting. Missing information causes delays and errors.
If you don't have a bank account, you can choose:
Fastest method. Takes about 5–10 minutes on a smartphone or computer.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and click "Apply for SRD". Only use this official website — never apply on other sites.
Type your 13-digit SA ID number, full name (must match your ID exactly), and date of birth. The system will verify your identity against Home Affairs records.
Use a number that is active and in your own name. SASSA sends an OTP (One-Time Password) to this number. You'll also receive all future communications here.
Enter the 6-digit OTP sent via SMS. If it doesn't arrive within 2 minutes, check your signal and try again. Best times for OTP delivery: before 6 AM or after 10 PM.
Answer honestly but carefully. Questions about employment, income, and other grants determine eligibility. Answering "Yes" to having income above R624/month automatically disqualifies you.
Enter your bank name, account number, and branch code. Your bank account name must match your ID name exactly. Alternatively, select Cash Send or retail collection.
Since September 2025, you must verify your identity with a fingerprint or facial scan (selfie). Follow the on-screen prompts. This can also be done at a SASSA office if your phone camera doesn't work.
After submission, note your application reference number. Use this if you need to follow up. Your status will initially show as Pending while SASSA verifies your information.
Screening Question Warning: The screening questionnaire is the most common cause of automatic declines. If you answer that you are employed, have income above R624/month, or receive UIF, your application will be automatically declined with a "Self Exclusion Response Found" code. Read each question carefully before answering.
Convenient if you have WhatsApp but limited data.
Open WhatsApp and send the word "Apply" (or "Hi") to SASSA's official WhatsApp number. The chatbot will guide you through the process.
The chatbot will ask for your ID number, personal details, and banking information. Reply to each prompt with the requested information.
Review the summary and confirm. You'll receive a confirmation message once your application is submitted.
Note: WhatsApp applications may still require you to complete eKYC verification via the online portal or at a SASSA office. Check your status regularly at srd.sassa.gov.za.
Works on any phone — no smartphone or data required.
From any South African phone, dial *134*7737# to access the SASSA SRD application menu.
Choose the apply option from the USSD menu and follow the prompts to enter your ID number and personal details.
Enter your details as requested. The session may time out after 2 minutes of inactivity, so have your information ready beforehand.
USSD Limitation: You cannot complete eKYC biometric verification via USSD. After applying, you'll need to verify via the online portal on a smartphone or visit a SASSA office to complete your biometric scan.
Best option if you have no phone access or need help with the application.
Use the SASSA website or call 0800 60 10 11 to locate your nearest office. Offices are open Monday to Friday, 07:30 – 16:00.
Bring your original SA ID book or smart card (not a copy). If you're a refugee, bring your Section 22 permit. Also bring your cellphone for OTP verification.
Queues can be very long. Arrive before 08:00 for the best chance of being helped that day. Bring water and shade protection.
A SASSA official will help you fill in the application and complete eKYC verification on the spot. This is the easiest way to ensure your biometric verification is done correctly.
Understanding the timeline helps set realistic expectations.
| Stage | Timeline | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Application submitted | Day 1 | Status shows as Pending. SASSA begins automated checks. |
| Database cross-checks | 1–14 days | Your data is checked against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, GEPF, SAFPS, credit bureaus, and bank records. |
| Identity verification | 2–4 weeks | If your details don't fully match, status changes to Referred (sent to Home Affairs). About 90% of referred applications are eventually approved. |
| Outcome decision | Up to 3 months | You receive Approved, Declined, or remain Pending. About 80% see Pending initially. |
| Payment processing | 26th–31st | If approved, payment is processed during the monthly window. View dates → |
These mistakes cause automatic declines or delays. Avoid them and you'll improve your chances.
Your name on the application must match your SA ID exactly. If your ID says "Johannes" but your bank says "John", the payment will fail. Fix this at Home Affairs before applying.
Using a phone number that belongs to someone else or a number you no longer have access to. You need this number for OTP verification and all future status checks.
The screening questionnaire asks about income and employment. Answering "Yes" to earning above R624/month triggers an automatic "Self Exclusion Response Found" decline. Read each question carefully.
Since September 2025, biometric verification is mandatory. Skipping it keeps your application in Pending status indefinitely. Complete it via the portal or at a SASSA office.
If you ever registered a business with CIPC (even if it's inactive), SASSA's system may flag you as having income. You may need to deregister the dormant company or appeal with proof of no income.
Previous NSFAS funding (even from years ago) or old UIF registrations can trigger declines. If this happens, appeal with supporting documents showing you're no longer receiving these benefits.
Submitting multiple applications doesn't help — the system only processes the first one per ID number per month. Multiple submissions can actually cause processing delays.
A decline in one month does not prevent you from applying again.
The SRD grant is reassessed every month. If you were declined for March, you can still be approved for April. Here's what to do:
If you previously received the SRD grant but it was stopped, here's the difference between reconfirmation and reapplication.
If your grant was paused because you missed the 3-month reconfirmation, you need to reconfirm (not reapply) at srd.sassa.gov.za.
If SASSA cancelled your grant during the 2025/2026 fraud review, you must submit a fresh application. Gather bank statements proving your income is below R624/month.
Yes. The Child Support Grant is the only SASSA grant you can receive alongside the SRD R370. If you receive Old Age, Disability, Foster Child, or any other SASSA grant, you cannot apply for SRD.
Yes. Asylum seekers with valid Section 22 permits can apply for the SRD grant. Use your permit number instead of an SA ID number. If the online portal doesn't accept your permit number, visit your nearest SASSA office in person with your permit document.
No. Once your initial application is submitted, SASSA automatically reassesses your eligibility each month. You only need to reconfirm every 3 months when prompted. However, if your grant was cancelled completely, you will need to submit a fresh application.
The portal experiences high traffic, especially early in the month. Try again during off-peak hours (before 6 AM or after 10 PM). Alternatively, use WhatsApp (082 046 8553) or USSD (*134*7737#) which have better uptime. Full troubleshooting guide →
Yes, completely free. SASSA never charges for applications. If anyone asks you for money to apply, it is a scam. Learn about SASSA scams →
After submitting, your status will show as "Pending" when you check at srd.sassa.gov.za. This means your application is in the system and being processed. SASSA also sends SMS notifications for status changes. Use our free status check tool to monitor your application.
